Activity 2 Week Three Day Four
Success Criteria:On your blog, write a short summary of the book (The Seven Stars Of Matariki). What was it about? Try to summarise the story in 6-8 sentences.

Long ago there was this young man called Mĩtai who lived with his seven brother in a little.Mĩtai loved his brother as much as he loved himself in fact they were the handsomest brothers in the village but had not got married yet because they couldn’t love anyone as much as themselves.

One day, Mĩtai and his brothers were hunting one day on a hill and spotted the most beautifulest woman singing, when a woman looked at each of Mĩtai’s brother they immediately fell in love.

Mĩtai’s brothers didn’t go hunting anymore they were spending their time fishing for kai moana for their wives and took no notice of them eating any food themselves.
Mĩtai had gotten more and more suspicious and asked there kororia what to do and he said”to follow them to see where they go. One day Mĩtai sat in the bush for a long time and had just almost left when he noticed 6 piwakawaka, then seven on a branch and quickly followed them when they flew away.
Mĩtai heard about their evil plan to starve his brothers all to death so he hurried back home and told his brother their plan hishe brothers listened closely to Mĩtai and set off the next morning with huge nets to capture their wives by them staying hidden.
Mĩtai and his brothers quickly took their wives back home when they caught them and asked their kororia again what to do and he said this time take them up to the god of the stars and get him to take them somewhere far far away and so he did.

Activity 3 Week Three Day Four
Success Criteria:Take a look at the three pictures of crazy, cool cloud formations below. On your blog, tell us what you see in the photo. What shape(s) do you see? Be sure to tell us which picture (1, 2 or 3) you have chosen and describe what you see in lots of detail!

In photo two this cloud reminds me of a huge tornado that looks soft and cuddly around the outside with the sun shining out of it. This photo also reminds me of the shape of a UFO than can be full of gigantic aliens. Some shapes I can see in this photo is a building underneath that looks like a tall squared triangle. I can’t really see any shapes doing with the cloud in this photo.
This photo is found on the Summer Learning Journey website but I am not sure where it was found.

Activity 1 Week Three Day Three(4 Points)
Success Criteria:Go onto the Bird of the Year website, look through the native birds on the site, and choose one that interests you.
On your blog, write a short description of your bird. Where does your bird normally live? What does your bird normally eat?  Post a picture of the bird underneath your description. Be sure to attribute your picture properly.

Pūkeko

Sharp, curved red beak snaps shut with grubby worms and buzzing insects in it mouth. Beautiful blue and black feathers flow out through its oval body. Tall thin straw like grass overgrown over the top of me, keeping me hidden from scaring hawks. You would usually find me near moist and wet swamps.
This photo is taken by Luc Hoogenstein and found on the Bird Of The Year Website.

Activity 2 Week Three Day Three (4 Points)
Success Criteria:On your blog, tell us what superpower you would like to
have and why you’d like to have it.

A superpower I would really want to have is to control water. I would want to do this because have you seen movies than can control it and even when it is in a cup of water the use their hand to lift a cylinder of water. It would be awesome to control the ocean as well like the waves and I would also want to control the weather because in Greymouth other when it is Summer it is usually cloudy with pouring or sprinkling rain so it would be really cool to change the weather.

Activity 3 Week Three Day Three (10 Points)
Success Criteria: Check out the ‘Top 10 Flying Animals of the World’ website to learn more about these incredible animals. Once you have explored the site, choose one animal and create a digital learning object (DLO, eg. a poster) that tells us all about the animal. Be sure to include at least three interesting facts and a picture or two of your animal! Please follow these instructions for attributing your pictures properly.
On your blog, post a final copy of your DLO.

Summer Learning Journey Week Three Day Two Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Three Day Two, Bumblebee’s(4 Points)
Success Criteria:On your blog type out the four ‘Unbee-lievable Facts about Bumblebees’ and fill in the blanks for each one.
Unbee-lievable Facts about Bumblebees
  • The word ‘bumblebee’ is a compound word (bumble + bee). The word ‘bumble’ means to drone.
  • Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 54 kilometres per hour (km/h).
  • Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to 90 percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.
  • Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to  50 times as much work as a normal honeybee.
  • The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the  the number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including  when people remove wildflowers from the landscape and the use of pesticides in the garden.

Activity 2  Week Three Day Two(4 Points)
Success Criteria: On your blog, list all of the foods that you don't like to put in your special draining sink.
Some foods I would like to put into my special draining sink that I don't like are egg shells, tomato, cucumber, pineapple, celery ,sliced pumpkin, parsnips and radish.

Activity 3 Week Three Day Two (10 Points)
Success Criteria:Let’s imagine that we tested the air in your classroom and found 7 different kinds of mould. Eek! The cleaner says that it takes 5 days for each mould to be eradicated (removed). If the school had to remove each mould one at a time, how long would it take to remove all the mould from the classroom?
On your blog, tell us how you would solve this tricky maths problem. Be sure to also post your final answer in days or weeks.

To figure this out the cleaner said it would take 5 days for one of the moulds to get removed. To work this maths problem out from here you go, since it said 5 days for 1 mould it would be another 5 for 2 moulds which equals 10 days for 2 moulds. You then go up in the 5 times tables like shown below. Once you get to the end your answer should be it taken 35 days (5 weeks) for 7 moulds to get removed from the classroom.

10-2
15-3

Summer Learning Journey Week Three Day One Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Three Day  One (4 points)
Success Criteria: On your blog, tell us what time of year you think is best for
tourists for come and visit. Be sure to share at least three things that tourists
could do while they were here in NZ.

I think the best time of year for the tourists to come and visit it the winter time
when it is snowing. I think this because in other countries they may not have
snow to play with and have a look at it could all be new to them. If I was in a
country with no snow and I came to New Zealand I would definitely love to see
snow in person.

Two activities  tourists could do when they come down here in the South Island
of New Zealand is to go skiing at Porters Heights and also snowboarding.
I have done skiing before I would recommend it, it was really, really fun to do
and it was my first time this year but I have never tried snowboarding but it
seems difficult to learn and master.

The third activity tourists could do in the winter time is you could get boogie
boards and go down hills on them, though some of them might not be children
anymore. So an activity for the adults is to go ice skating. I have done this before
it is so fun. I recommend this activity to the adults and children tourists.

Activity 2 Week Three Day One (4 Points)
Success Criteria:On your blog, list five different things that we can do to protect
ourselves from the sun this summer! Read the Sunsmart website.

  1. Apply heaps of sunblock to your skin to the places where your skin is exposed to the sun.
  2. Just because you have sunblock on doesn’t mean your sunsmart you need a sunhat to cover your face from the sun as well.
  3. The best thing to do is to put on a long sleeved t-shirt.
  4. The next thing to do is to put a pair of sunglasses on to protect your eyes from UV radiation.
  5. If you don’t want to get sunburnt you can also sit under a shady tree or gazebo.

Activity 3 Week Three Day One (15 Points)
Success Criteria:While it can get hot in New Zealand, especially in the middle of summer, it gets even hotter in places like Dallol (Ethiopia), Dasht-e Loot (Iran), Tirat Zvi (Israel), Kabili (Tunisia) and Bandar-e Mahshahr (Iran).
The hottest temperature on record in each place is: Dallol: 41oC; Dasht-e Loot: 71oC;
Tirat Zvi: 54oC; Kabili: 55oC; Bandar-e Mahshahr: 51oC. Crazy ‘eh?!
For this activity, you are asked to use this information to create a graph. The graph should have a title along with the names of each city and their hottest recorded temperatures. You can draw the graph by hand or use a computer programme like Google Draw to create your graph. It’s completely up to you!

Summer Learning Journey Week Two Day Five Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Two Day Five [4 points]
Success Criteria:On your blog, tell us what you think about this overfishing rule
and why you think it!
I think that being charged for overfishing is fair. I think this because if you catch
too many fish there won’t be enough fish to populate more. This can also decrease
the number of fish left in the ocean by hundreds and even thousands. If each time a
person fished and they were able to catch over the limit of fish you were allowed to
catch imagine how much fish a group of 20 people would catch altogether.

Activity 2 Week Two Day Five(4 Points)
Success Criteria: Use Google to help you find two other polluted rivers in New Zealand.

On your blog, tell us:
1) The names of the rivers.
2) The location of the rivers.
3) What is being done to clean up the rivers (if anything)

Grey River
1)A New Zealand river that is polluted is called the Grey River.
2) The direction of the Grey River is in the northwest of the South Island in New Zealand.
It is found traveling between the Blaketown and Cobden tip heads. The water from the
Grey River flows from in between of the tip heads out to the Tasman Sea.
3) People are trying to help the Grey River by having a rainfall system that shows how
much the rain increases and decreases. The Grey River is polluted because when the
river is in flood the stuff from the sewage goes into the Grey River polluting it.

  Ngakawau River
  1. The second New Zealand River that is polluted is called the Ngakawau River.
  2. The Ngakawau River is found northwest of New Zealand as well, in Westport.
  3. I think people aren't trying to help the Ngakawau River from all the coal drainage,
  4. being dumped into the river.

Activity 3 Week Two Day Five(5 Points)
Success Criteria:On your blog, list three different ideas or strategies for raising

funds to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. What could you do to fundraise here in
New Zealand?
1)The first way on how us New Zealanders can raise funds is by getting sponsored.
I could go around asking “do you want to help the Great Barrier Reef?” I could get given
money into a bucket from people on the streets or in local shops and I could from different
companies that sponsor money to me so they can help the Great Barrier Reef.
2)A second way I could fundraise to preserve the Great Barrier Reef is by selling raffle tickets.
I could do this by selling them  at a stand where people can buy the tickets $2 each.
They will know they are helping the Great Barrier Reef when they buy the tickets because
I would of said “hello, do you want to buy a $2 raffle ticket to help sponsor the Great Barrier Reef?”
3)The last way I could help sponsor the Great Barrier Reef  is by organising a fun day at the pool
where you can have a free swim and have lunch like fish and chips for $2 and you could also
book in for $10 so you wouldn’t miss it. To keep kids and adults entertained I could get someone
to perform magic tricks. This will help sponsor the Great Barrier Reef by raising money through
a fun day at the pool with lunch.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two Day Four Activity 3

Activity 3 Week Two Day Four[10 points]
Success Criteria: For this activity, choose one of the following three selfies. From left to right:
Selfie #1,   Selfie #2, Selfie #3
On your blog, write a short story about what you think is happening in the picture.
Be sure to tell us where you think the people are and what you think they were doing
at the time that they stopped to pose for the selfie. To earn full points, the story must
be 8 – 10 sentences long.
I’m going to be writing a story about the third photo.
These photos are found on the SLJ website.

Above The Horizon

As I walk across the roof to the edge of the building I put my hand in my pocket.
I grab by huge phone, type in the password and click onto the camera logo.
My beautiful face appears onto the screen. I lift one leg onto the ledge then the
next steadying myself so I wouldn’t fall. I admired the view for ages, suddenly I said
“okay stop getting distracted, I have to take this photo before I fall off.” I then slowly
and gracefully lifted the phone towards my face with the buildings below behind me.
Snap, I took the photo. As I jump down off the ledge looking happy with the photo in my hand I admire the view once more.
This view reminded me of Italy how all the buildings had been built close to
the water.
