Summer Learning Journey Week Two/Day Four Activity 1

Activity 1 Week Two Day Four [4 points]
Success Criteria: Let’s imagine that you had the chance to visit Milford Sound by boat, foot (walking) or air (helicopter). Which option would you prefer? On your blog tell us which of the three options you would take to explore Milford Sound out
of a Helicopter, walking or boat. Be sure to tell us why you have chosen this option.
If I was going to the milford sounds I would travel in a helicopter. I would want to travel by a helicopter because when you fly over mountains,
rivers, forests and even the ocean there would be an amazing view from above
it all. I would also like to travel by a helicopter because I have never been on a helicopter in my life so far and it would be a great experience for me.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two Day Three Activity Three

Activity 3, Week Two Day Three  [10 points]
Success Criteria:
Let’s imagine that the average adult can lift 25 kg and the average child can lift 15 kg. How many adults and children will it take to move the giant squid into its new room at Te Papa? [Note: There is more than one right answer to this question.]
On your blog, tell us how you will solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer.
To figure out how many adults you will need to lift the 500 kg squid you can figure it out by going 25 x 20= 500kg. You can also figure this out by going 500 divided by 25 which is 20. So you need 20 adults to lift the 500kg squid.

To figure out how many children you need to lift the squid you can also go 500 divided by 15 which equals 33.3333333. So 33.3333333 x 15 equals 500 so you would need 33.3333333 children to lift a 500 kg squid.

Activity 2: A Local Delicacy [4 points]
Success Criteria: For this activity, please choose a favourite food and find a recipe for it. On your blog, share a list of the ingredients that you need to make this food. You must type out the list of ingredients yourself (and not simply copy and paste it from a website) to earn full points.

Macaroni and Cheese Recipe
This you will need:
-Medium sized teapot
-250ml(l cup) of water
-60 ml(¼ cup) of low fat milk
-4.5g(1 teaspoon) of butter
Recipe

Firstly you need to pour your 1 cup of water into your medium sized pot. Secondly you add your ¼ cup of low fat milk with the water in the pot. Thirdly you add the 1 teaspoon of  butter with the milk and water.
Now you need to put the pot onto a ring on your oven and put it on low and let the butter melt and occasionally stir. Once the butter has melted you can pour the macaroni and cheese into the same pot. Now you let the macaroni and cheese on simmer and occasionally stir. The macaroni will start to grow   bigger and look more covered in cheese. Close to the end of cooking the macaroni there will be hardly any milk, butter and water left it would be just cheesy macaroni. I like to sometimes add pieces of bacon to the macaroni so I add that in at the start when I poured the macaroni in the pot.
Once the liquid in the macaroni has left the pot you can turn off the ring and pour macaroni into a bowl and eat.

DAY 3: First You ‘Sea’ Me, Now You Don’t…

Activity 1: Night Owls [4 points]
Success Criteria:
Here in New Zealand we have many amazing and unique sea creatures, including penguins. The blue penguin, or kororā, is particularly special because it is the smallest penguin in the entire world! Blue penguins are typically found on the east coast of the South Island in places like Oamaru but they can be hard to spot as they rarely leave the water. If they do come onto land it is usually at night, when most of us are sound asleep! That’s because they are nocturnal. Not all of us, however, sleep all night. In fact, some people love to stay awake late into the evening. People who like to stay up late are called ‘night owls.’ Are you a night owl or are you an early riser, like me? I typically wake up every day around 6:00 a.m. and jump out of bed, ready to start the day!
On your blog, tell us whether you are a night owl or an early riser. Then, tell us about the rest of your family. Are they the same as you

Hi I’m Jennae. I think I am a night owl because I usually stay up around 10:30-
12:00 most nights and won’t wake up early. All my siblings including me use to wake up
around 6:30 - 8:00 some mornings for school, but now it is the summer holidays.
My younger brother Jack and my older brother Jayden are  night owls as well. Jack
and Jayden are always in the garage rebuilding a car, fixing a motorbike etc until the
go to bed between 12:30 and 2:00am. My Dad is a night owl and a early riser because
my dad goes to sleep most nights around 2:00, but he also wakes up every morning
for his work day around 5:30 am.
My older sister Kayla she is a night owl and a early riser. She goes to sleep most nights
around 9:30-10:30 and wakes up most days for work about 7:30.My Mum is a early riser.
She always goes to sleep quite early to wake up in the morning around 7:30 as well
because she works with my older sister Kayla at the same work place.

Personal Comment: I think our bed times and morning times are all different and
sometimes they aren’t what I had written they can occasionally change once in a while.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two/Day Two Activity 3

Activity 3 Week Two, Day Two, Plants(10 Points)
Success Criteria: Follow this link to read about 10 of the strangest plant species
in the world. When you are finished, choose two of the plants from the list. On your blog,
list three similarities and three differences between the two plants that you chose.
To earn five extra bonus points, post a picture of both plants on your blog.
I chose the two plants called the venus flytrap and the pitcher plant.
Simlarities
1)The venus flytrap consumes flies and the pitcher plant can consume mice so they both
consume something.
2) Both of these two plants are carnivorous. That means both of the plants eats small insects
and animals as food.
3) They are both very hard to find and really rare.
Differences

1) A difference is that the venus flytrap catch their prey by closing their lobes when a insect
comes in contact with the plant then opens and sucks it in. The pitcher plant has this special
type of fluid inside of it that attracts their prey.
2) Both of these plants looks very different. The pitcher plant looks like a sack hanging from a
stem and the venus fly trap looks like a noxious weed that has a comb on the end.
3)The venus flytrap is safe to your pets and the pitcher plant can cause harm to your pets.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two/ Day Two Activity 2

Activity 2 Week Two, Day Two, Hulk (4 points)
Success Criteria: For this activity you are asked to think of someone who is very tough
and strong. They can be someone who you know personally or they can be a character that
you have read about in a book, seen in a movie, or on a television show.
On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong
and tough?
Information About Hulk
Hulk is a fictional character and fighter on the Avengers/ Marvel movies and
books/comics/magazines. He plays a important part in the movies, he is a really strong
superhero.
Who Is He?
Hulk is part of the avengers team. He is a really strong superhero because when
hulk gets mad or stressed he turns himself into a huge, angry, strong green monster.

Why Do I Think He's Is So Tough and Strong?
I think hulk is really strong and tough in the movies because he throws people/bad people
through walls and seems to kill them easily or scare them away. This happens when people
drive him mad or stressed. Also when people attack him
Hulk doesn’t even move he keeps walking and can’t feel it because he is so tough.
