Summer Learning Journey Week One/Day Three Activity 3

Activity 3 WWF ( World Wildlife Fund) 10 points
Success Criteria:In 1961, a number of people came together to start
an organisation called the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The main goal of
this organisation was/is to protect life on earth. Hundreds of WWF staff work
in countries all over the world trying to protect our planet and the animals
who live here. To learn more about their amazing work, click on one of the two
video links below.Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and,
using full sentences. Tell us:1) The name of the animal the WWF is working to
save. 2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal. 3) What, if any, success they have had protecting the animal.

The type of animal the WWF team is trying to save is a freshwater seal called the
Saimaa Ringed Seal. What the WWF is doing to help save the Saimaa Ringed Seal
is mother seals dig into snow banks to give birth to their pups. If they don’t give birth to
their pups in snow banks they give birth to them on open snow without protection they
can quite quickly lead to death. So the WWF people helped the seals by digging them
snowbanks for them to give birth in. The WWF team has helped the seals a lot.
Back before the 1980’s there were about 120 individual seals left and in 1979 when
the WWF team started to help there the number of seal increased to 390 individual seals.

  1. Kia ora Jennae,

First of all, I love that you have written your answers out in full sentences, it helps the readers know what questions you are answering, great start! Yes, you're absolutely correct, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is working hard to save freshwater seals known as the Saimaa Ringed Seal. They are one of the rarest seals in the world.

You have shown good understanding about what the WWF are doing to save these freshwater seals. It's great to see you have done your research and included some factual information as well. It's amazing what people can achieve when we come together and offer a helping hand, don't you think? There is still plenty of work to be done to ensure that we are able to protect these animals but any efforts made will always be helpful to their well-being. You might be able to find out more information on the outcome of their supportive projects here:

    Keep up the good work,
    Evelyn :)
