Summer Learning Journey | Week Three

Week Three- Day One |The Worldwide Web
Activity 1
For this activity please take screenshots of four different websites that you find helpful for your learning. They can be websites that you use in class or websites that you use on your own at home. Present the screenshots as a poster or put them into a presentation.
On your blog, share your poster or presentation of your favourite learning websites.

Week Three- Day One|Influencers
Activity 2
For this activity please imagine that you had the chance to create your own YouTube channel. What would it be about? What kinds of videos would you create and post?
On your blog, write a description of the YouTube channel you would like to create.
Having the chance to be an influencer and posting videos online people would enjoy would be amazing. In my previous years I have had two different youtube channels. When I was around 10 years old, my friends and I would get together and do fun challenges and tutorials, like bean boozled, gymnastics, guess what’s in my mouth, etc. My second channel I have recently made was a music channel. Having this channel has boosted my confidence, and gotten me out of my comfort zone because I post videos of my singing and playing the keyboard. I really have a passion for music and it’s something I love to do as a hobby.
If I had a youtube channel I would have one almost like a vlogging channel. I know it sounds cringy, but recording videos of friends and family, it would hold great memories and we could watch them as we grow older
Week Three- Day One |Apple vs Microsoft
Activity 3
For this activity we would like you to use your best researching skills to find three more examples of common rivalries. They can be in the sports world or not - it’s totally up to you!
On your blog, describe the three rivalries that you have found. Who is involved? To gain the full 6 points for this activity, please provide a picture for each rivalry. The picture should represent the rivalry.
There are so many different rivalries that I can choose from to do this task. Things to do with sports, meals, takeaways, teams, etc. Having to research about the different common rivalries, is definitely something new for me and there are three examples of some that I want to tell you about.
The first one I know is the All Blacks vs Wallabies. The All Blacks and the Wallabies are both rugby teams. The All Blacks are a New Zealand rugby team and the Wallabies is an Australian team. Why are the All Blacks and Wallabies rivals? These two rugby teams are known to be rivals because New Zealand and Australia sit across the Tasman Sea from each other. The people involved with this rival is definitely New Zealanders, Australians and their rugby teams.

My second common rival I found by researching online is the boys vs girls. This is a really common rival that is found mostly all round the world. The boys vs girls is a common rivalry because these are the two different genders, and people wanting to know which one is better than the other. The people involved with the rivalry is obviously the boys and girls in the world.

Image result for girls

The last rival I found by researching online is coke vs pepsi. Coke and pepsi are known to be almost exactly the same drink. Most people would say they taste the same, but others would say they are different. Coke and pepsi are common rivals because of exactly that, for them tasting very similar. Although these two drinks taste almost the exact same, one is known to be better than the other. This war, I guess you could call it, has been going on for  a while and them both winning awards. Obviously, the coke and pepsi drinks are the two things involved with this rivalry, as well as the companies who make these drinks.

Week Three- Day Two | Through Careful Observation
Activity 1
For this activity, we would like you to select one of the pictures below and to study or observe it closely. What do you see?
On your blog, describe the painting in detail. What do you see when you look at it? Please give us as much detail as you can!
Smooth strokes of blue weave their way around the night sky. Yellow stars shine brightly tonight. Curvy mountains, flow up and down, like barriers, separating the two towns. Houses placed one by one, with shadows moving past glass windows. Dark green and brown plants move gracefully with the wind.
Week Three- Day Two | Overcoming Adversity
Activity 2
For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, experienced a challenge and overcame it.
On your blog, recount a time when you or someone you know experienced a challenge and overcame it.
There are so many things I could write down that were challenges for myself and others around me. I am going to be doing this task about myself and learning the keyboard.
Music has always been a passion of mine, from singing lyrics to songs Mum printed out for me when I was young, to creating my own songs and learning how to play the keyboard. Me learning how to play the keyboard had some difficulties but also had some easy parts within it. Things like what fingers to use on which keys, what the keys were called and learning songs. I currently know how to play  Ode De Joy ( small parts of it) , My Heart Will Go On, See You Again, beginning of Skinny Love and almost the first half of Thousand Years. These songs were all different to learn and had their own challenges. I enjoy playing the keyboard as well as many other things. My friends and family support me a lot with it, especially my Dad. He is always listening to me play the keyboard and even a couple times it has brought tears to his eyes.
To overcome this challenge I kept practising until I learned more of a song everyday. Practise does help a lot with anything if you want to be better at something, so what are you waiting for, start your challenge today!
Week Three- Day Two | Hidden Figures
Activity 3
For this activity we would like you to give coding a try. Click on the link for the website: code.org. If you try an activity and it is too easy, try a harder level!
On your blog, post a screenshot of your completed shape. Underneath the shape tell us what you thought of the coding app. Is it good? Why/why not?

Doing this task and learning how to use different coding apps is great. Doing these things makes children, teenagers and adults think twice about what they are doing. This kind of coding also shows people what happens behind the scenes on a computer, and for them to know and learn how it works. This year in my classroom we used a website called Scratch. This website was very similar but had its differences like using figures, animals, pictures other than creating shapes. Using this app there was a little confusion that I had to think about but I got the hang of it and it’s really easy.

Week Three- Day Three |Nanogirl
Activity 1
or this activity, please visit the ‘Build Tiny New Zealand’ website and scroll to the bottom of the page where you will find a series of Video Tours of tiny houses. Watch any three videos on the site.
On your blog, tell us whether, or not, you would like to live in a tiny house one day. Please be sure to tell us why you feel the way that you do.
If I could choose whether I could live in a small house or not, I wouldn’t mind either. Living in a small house for a little part of my life would be fine, then I can upgrade to a bigger house along the way. When I first move out of my parents house, I wouldn’t mind living in a tiny house because I would be by myself for the first part. Then as I grow up, getting my own full-time job where I earn a good amount of money, I can then shift to a bigger house. I feel this way because I think this is the right thing to do and it wouldn’t feel like I’m rushing into things too quickly.
Week Three-Day Three | Printing Prosthetics
Activity 2
For this activity, we would like you to learn more about 3D printed prosthetics (artificial body parts, like hands or arms). Please watch this video about 3D printed prosthetics (artificial body parts, like hands or arms).
On your blog, tell your readers:
  1. One thing that you learned from watching this video
  2. One thing that surprised you when watching this video
By watching this video there are numerous things I had learned. Out of all the things I learned the one I want to tell you about is that nothing is impossible if your think positive. These incredible people design and build 3D printed hands that changes the lives of others. When you hear someone say they are going to build hands for people, your reaction might be “ how?”.
One thing that surprised me when watching this video was the kind of stuff humans are capable of. Doing things like this is amazing and it’s surprising that any human can design and build this kind of stuff.

Week Three- Day Three |Need for Speed
Activity 3
Speaking of fast, for this activity we would like you to design your own fast vehicle. It can be anything! Please draw your super-fast vehicle on paper or use an app to help you. If it was me, I would make my super-fast vehicle something that I could use to get to school and home again each day!
On your blog, post a picture of your speedy vehicle along with a written description of how it works. Tell your readers what your vehicle is made of, any special features, how fast it goes, and who might use your vehicle.
For this task I chose to use an online website to design a super-fast vehicle. On this website I had to choose a car company, in this case it was Ferrari. I then modified it from its original state to a completely different look of car.
The first thing I added to the car was the suspension. Having lower suspension ( car close to the ground) when driving creates more speed. Next I added a spoiler. A spoiler is an aerodynamic device that changes the flow of the air to also create more speed. I next added a carbon fibre hood. You might not already know but carbon fibre is a material that is known to be very light, so this will be great on a car because it makes the car lighter so then it can move faster and more efficiently. The last thing I modified on the car was the mirrors. The shape the mirrors are in is great for aerodynamics.
This car can get up to at least 300mph and anyone could use this car but in particular this would be good for car races. There are any special features to this car just the usual car parts.
Week Three- Day Four | Medical Mavericks
Activity 1
For this activity, please follow this link to view the list of Nobel Prize winners, choose one, read about them and then share your learning on your blog.
On your blog, tell your readers who you chose and then tell us about them in five to ten sentences. Who were they? What did they do that was so special? Feel free to include a picture of your chosen Nobel Prize winner on your blog.

Looking through this link, seeing all the different nobel prize winners I could choose from is pretty amazing. I was scrolling up and down trying to pick one that I wanted to write about but there was just so many, so I chose to do Yoshinori Ohsumi.

Yoshinori is a  Japanese cell biologist specializing in autophagy. Autophagy is the process of cells that is used to destroy and recycle cellular components. From 2012 to 2017, Yoshinori has received three awards for his work to do with autophagy. He was awarded the Kyoto Prize for Basic Sciences in 2012, in 2016 the Nobel Prize in Physiology/ Medicine, and in 2017, the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for his discoveries of mechanisms in autophagy. Yoshinori was born in Fukuoka, Japan. Yoshinori went to many places to build on his work along the years. These  include ,Rockefeller University in New York City, University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Week Three - Day Four | imoko
Activity 2
For this activity please think about your own health and well-being (hauora). What do you, or those in your family, do to stay healthy?
On your blog, share five things that you do to stay healthy and strong.
There are many activities and things I do to stay healthy and strong. Firstly I do a lot of sports. I play sports like netball, basketball, hockey, touch, rugby 7’s, 15 a-side rugby and rugby league. Along with these sports, I also trial and get into teams for these sports to represent West Coast.
The second thing I do to stay healthy and strong is including fruits in my meals. Fruits contain a lot of vitamins and minerals, folate, vitamin C and potassium. These are amazing source of dietary fibre which maintains a healthy gut and can prevent constipation and other digestion problems.
The third thing I do to stay healthy and strong is including vegetables in my meals. Vegetables include the same things as fruits, along with vitamin A, and E. The potassium inside of vegetables may help  maintain healthy blood pressure.
The fourth thing I do to stay healthy and strong  is regular exercise. Over the holidays when I don’t have my sports on I tend to do a little exercise like running around a track, going for bike rides and swimming All three of these activities are very good for your health and can improve your fitness levels.
The last thing I do to stay healthy and strong is by always staying active. When it’s a miserable day and there is nothing to do, most people would be relaxing and watching movies and videos, but I’m always doing my paper run, helping my brother with his one, and relieving for people who are away to do their paper runs. To keep active I always help my mother with chores, and would you agree, most chores you have to be on your feet being active?

Week Three- Day Four | Putting Our Heads Together
For this activity, we would like you to imagine that John Kirwan, Mike King and/or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge called you up and asked you to design a new poster for their organisation. You could use Google Draw to help design your poster.
On your blog, post a final copy of your poster and include a description of the poster. What is on the poster? Why did you include the pictures or words that you did? The more that you can tell us about your design, the better!
For this poster I chose to do it for the duke and duchess of Cambridge for their organisation. I had done my research about Kate and William and recently they have launched the Earthshot prize, which aims to tackle climate change issues. On this poster I included what climate change is and what is affected. I thought this would be important for those readers who might not have a clue what these might mean. Along with those I also included two questions to get the people reading the poster to think about climate change and what they could do to help. I included the background photo of Earth from the view of space because the Earth and everything inside  is what is affected and completely related to the topic of climate change.
Week Three- Day Five | Ministry Of Inspiration
Activity 1
For this activity please watch this video about the Pasifika Aquabots competition that was held in Nelson. The students had to navigate their Aquabots around a swimming pool, collecting things and visiting different ‘islands.’
On your blog, tell us whether you would like to join an Underwater Robotics team at your school. Why or why not?
Watching this video was definitely new learning for me and I had never seen anything like this before. Looking at the robots picking up toys sharks and other objects by a control is pretty cool. Doing this would cool  to try out but I wouldn’t actually think I would join an Underwater Robotics team myself. I wouldn’t join an Underwater Robotics team because I feel like it wouldn’t really interest me and not doing this wouldn’t matter to me because I would be participating in many other things anyway.

Week Three- Day Five |Caine’s Arcade
Activity 2
For this activity we would like to know about your favourite game. It can be a board game, a card game, a game that you play outside with friends (e.g., rugby) or a quiet game that you play by yourself.
On your blog, tell us about your favourite game. What is it called? How do you play it?
There are many games that I enjoy playing with my friends as well as family. The game I always play with my friends is K’s and A’s ( kings and assholes).
This is a card game where you can play with as many people as you want. First you shuffle the pack of cards and deal all the cards evenly to everyone. The three of diamonds always starts. The order of the cards goes, 3, 4 ,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, J, Q, K, A, 2.  Make sure you take the two jokers out of the pile. This game is really simple to play, when the person puts down the 3 of diamonds if they have any other 3’s in their pile they can choose to leave it as singles or change it to doubles, triples and quads. This goes for everyone with any of the 12 different cards. When the next person goes they have to put a card (s)  higher than the one that was placed before them. Since the two is the highest card you can end a round by putting a two down, pushing the piles to the side and starting a new one. Eventually your cards are going to run out. The first person out with no cards left is the king and the last one that still has their cards is the asshole. In the next game the asshole gives the king two of their best cards and the king gives the asshole two of their worst cards. Then this continues.
Week Three - Day Five | Choose Your Own
Activity 3
For this activity, choose one person and read all about them.
On your blog, provide us with:
  1. The name of the person
  2. A description of the work they do/have done 3. An explanation of how they/their work has had an impact on the lives of others
Looking through a list of scientists, technologists and inventors, there are many different people I could choose to write about. I thought about who I could choose, searching online and ending up finding out about a man called Karl (Carl) Benz.
Do you know what he was most famous for? Karl Benz was famous for building his first automobile in 1885. In fact, Karl was famous for inventing automobiles. Before he was mostly known for his invention, he was a German engineer. A year later after Karl’s invention, he was given a patent from the government for his invention. A patent is an authority or license from the government for a right or title for a set period. This also meant that no one could make, use and take credit for his invention.
Karl’s invention impacts millions of people worldwide. How? Having an invention that saves people time and effort is very useful. Just knowing you always have a quicker option than walking, or biking is great. Although his invention isn’t all good. Even though this invention helps a lot of people, this has also resulted in people being not as active and lazier than they used to be.

  1. Hi Jennae

What a very busy time you have had doing all of these activities. As always you are completing them to a very high standard.

The person that you have chosen for the Nobel Prize question is truly an amazing person. I had never heard of Autophagy before. It sounds like he has been able to regenerate and recycle cells in humans. I am sure that this will a massive step in helping doctors cure so many diseases that are currently unable to be treated.
He has well and truly earned his Nobel Prize. What a very clever man!

Keeping healthy is such an important thing to do from a very young age. Being able to take care of ourselves and recognising what our bodies need to do this. You have done a great job listing all of the things that you see as important.
Everyone playing some kind of sport is a great thing, especially kids playing sport I think should almost be compulsory. It helps not only with physical health but social skills also. If you play a team sport then you need to learn to get along with others, which is healthy!
Eating lots of fruit and veges is important too. Everything in moderation is a good moto to live by.
I am pleased to hear that you keep busy by helping around the house with chores also. It is great to help your Mum out! I am sure she will appreciate this greatly.

And lastly climate change, this is such a hot topic at the moment. Sadly I cannot see the poster that you have made.
Can you please give us access so we can see it as I am sure that it is fantastic.
We are making progress with climate change in small ways. All of the shops getting rid of plastic bags so that they are not going into the landfills is a way that each town can do. And also to recycle our rubbish.
It will be great to see the big countries come on board with their carbon emissions too.

I look forward to seeing your poster once you give us the access that we need.

Thanks for doing such a great job with your activities. You are amazing!

    Keep up the great work!

    Until next time

    Allie :)

    1. Kia ora Allie,

Same with me. When I first did the task around Nobel Prize winners, I'd never actually heard about autophagy and the man who discovered many things inside of it.It's quite interesting once I had learned all aboutt it and what it does. Do you enjoy science?

I definitely agree with you! Keeping healthy is a very important thing to start doing from a young age, and it should almost be compulsory at everyone has to do at least one sport. Do you do any type of exercise? If anoyone wants to stay fit, healthy, strong, what ever it is, you also need to watch what your eating. There are foods that are not so good when you are trying to do these things and their are foods which are good for your body and help it grow. These are called fruits and vegetables. Do you eat your fruits and vegetables? If so, what fruits and what vegetables?

I am definitely against climate change. Watching videos around the internet about what it happening to our world is very sad. During the year all the primary schools had a competition for the Rotary Speech. This is a competition where you choose a topic to do yuor speech about it and you can choose whether you would like to say it infront of an audience. My speech was about climate change. What do you to help stop climate change?

Thank you for the comment, Allie!

  2. Hi Jennae,

Kei te pehea koe? (How are you?) It is amazing to see you have completed all of the week three activities! Well done!

I would love to see what your favourite learning websites are, but unfortunately I am unable to view your document. Once you have given us access to this, I would love to see what you have done!

Wow! It is so awesome that you used to have your own youtube channel. What was it called? It sounds like the videos you and your friends made together would have been fun to make and also just as fun for others to watch too! I can imagine what your bean boozled video would have been like because I have tried those beans myself. They are a lot of fun but can be disgustingly gross too. I think I ended up with a rotten egg flavour one time. It was not nice!

I am so impressed by the effort and time you have put into the rivalries activity. All Blacks and Wallabies is definitely a rivalry us Kiwis know all about! There is a constant debate about which team is the better team. I will always support the All Blacks. Even when I lived in Australia, I still supported the All Blacks.

The boy vs girl rival also reminds me of sibling rivalry too. Do you have rivalry between you and your sister or brothers? I think it is common for siblings to have some kind of rivalry, although I don’t feel like I did with my brothers growing up. We got along really well.

I think your third rivalry between Coca-Cola and Pepsi is quite an interesting one. Do you think they taste similar. I can definitely taste the difference and I 100% prefer Coca-Cola over Pepsi. I actually don’t like the taste of Pepsi at all. What one do you prefer? Can you taste a real difference between the two?

You have done an incredible job completing all of these activities Jennae. I have really enjoyed reading them all. I cannot wait to read all of your week four activities too (which I see you have posted today)!

    1. Hey Leisha,

Kei te pai ahau, kei te pehea koe?

Having a youtube channel was actually pretty amazing, I'd have to agree with you. The youtube channel I had when I was younger was called ' Naenae6776'. The channel I had made during last year was called ' Jennae ( then my last name). My little friend group of about four people, we all had youtube channels but I got up to 70 subscribers. This may not seem like a lot because of all the people who have millions but this was to me. What influenced me to creating a youtube channel was my older brother. His channel was called ' Bionic Dude'. This had videos of him and the rest of my siblings riding the go kart, motorbikes, cars, swimming at the beach and fun little trips. My sister also made a channel quite similiar to his. The bean boozled challenge I did was actually with my younger brother. I don't know if you imgained correctly what might of happened but he puked off camera due to eating a very disgusting jelly bean. Have you ever thought about creating a youtube channel? If you did, what would you do it about?

Do I have rivalry between my siblings? I don't think I do to be honest. We have our little arguments and fights like most siblings do and sometimes we say one is better than the over but not very often.

Drinking coke and pepsi, I can taste the difference but they are like very very similiar to each other. It's almost like a company tried copying the other and didn't succeed. I agree, Coca-Cola is definitely the better drink out of the two.

Thank you for the positive comment Leisha,
I hope you have a fun rest of the holidays! You got any plans?

  3. Kia ora Jennae,

My name is Beren. I am a blog commenter from Auckland working as part of the 2019/2020 Summer Learning Journey programme.

Well done on your description of Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’. I love how you have turned your description into a kind of poetry. I especially like your use of personification, with lines such as “stars shine brightly” and “plants move gracefully”. What do you think of this painting? Do you like it’s style?

I also like your example of a time when you overcame adversity. I am glad you have persevered with playing the keyboard. Music is a passion of mine as well, and I also remember struggling when learning the piano. It takes a long time for your fingers to gets used to playing doesn’t it? But it is so worth it when you can play your favourite songs.

After learning the keys, I learned the guitar. Do you know how to play any other instruments? Do you want to learn more in the future?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the coding app code.org. I think it is great that coding websites like this exist as they help to simplify the coding process. I am glad you got the hang out of it quickly, do you think you will use it again?

Thank you so much for sharing all these blog posts with us! I really enjoyed reading them :)

  4. Hi Jennae

Thanks for the awesome reply. I do enjoy walking and made myself a goal a couple of years ago to walk a half marathon. I have now done three. So feel quite good about that. I have a dog so I like to walk with her also.

Keep up all the comments on other students blogs and enjoy the rest of your holidays!
