Summer Learning Journey Week Two Day Five Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Two Day Five [4 points]
Success Criteria:On your blog, tell us what you think about this overfishing rule
and why you think it!
I think that being charged for overfishing is fair. I think this because if you catch
too many fish there won’t be enough fish to populate more. This can also decrease
the number of fish left in the ocean by hundreds and even thousands. If each time a
person fished and they were able to catch over the limit of fish you were allowed to
catch imagine how much fish a group of 20 people would catch altogether.

Activity 2 Week Two Day Five(4 Points)
Success Criteria: Use Google to help you find two other polluted rivers in New Zealand.

On your blog, tell us:
1) The names of the rivers.
2) The location of the rivers.
3) What is being done to clean up the rivers (if anything)

Grey River
1)A New Zealand river that is polluted is called the Grey River.
2) The direction of the Grey River is in the northwest of the South Island in New Zealand.
It is found traveling between the Blaketown and Cobden tip heads. The water from the
Grey River flows from in between of the tip heads out to the Tasman Sea.
3) People are trying to help the Grey River by having a rainfall system that shows how
much the rain increases and decreases. The Grey River is polluted because when the
river is in flood the stuff from the sewage goes into the Grey River polluting it.

  Ngakawau River
  1. The second New Zealand River that is polluted is called the Ngakawau River.
  2. The Ngakawau River is found northwest of New Zealand as well, in Westport.
  3. I think people aren't trying to help the Ngakawau River from all the coal drainage,
  4. being dumped into the river.

Activity 3 Week Two Day Five(5 Points)
Success Criteria:On your blog, list three different ideas or strategies for raising

funds to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. What could you do to fundraise here in
New Zealand?
1)The first way on how us New Zealanders can raise funds is by getting sponsored.
I could go around asking “do you want to help the Great Barrier Reef?” I could get given
money into a bucket from people on the streets or in local shops and I could from different
companies that sponsor money to me so they can help the Great Barrier Reef.
2)A second way I could fundraise to preserve the Great Barrier Reef is by selling raffle tickets.
I could do this by selling them  at a stand where people can buy the tickets $2 each.
They will know they are helping the Great Barrier Reef when they buy the tickets because
I would of said “hello, do you want to buy a $2 raffle ticket to help sponsor the Great Barrier Reef?”
3)The last way I could help sponsor the Great Barrier Reef  is by organising a fun day at the pool
where you can have a free swim and have lunch like fish and chips for $2 and you could also
book in for $10 so you wouldn’t miss it. To keep kids and adults entertained I could get someone
to perform magic tricks. This will help sponsor the Great Barrier Reef by raising money through
a fun day at the pool with lunch.

  1. Kia Ora Jennae, Nice work on explain what where and why. You are a real good blogger. Keep it up. Some of the words are too small for me to read. Would you do anything different to help stop pollution?
    Have a great Christmas,

  2. Hi Jennae

I agree with you about the over fishing. The fine I think should stay as well. If you lowered he level of the fine then people would not care about it as much. If it is set really high then hopefully they will think twice about fishing in the certain spot as they will get a huge fine.
Do you like to eat fish? Do you or your family go fishing?
I like eating fish and it would be great if there is some left for years to come.

I didn't realise that the Ngakawau river was so polluted. Then when you think about it with the coal mine right there it is no wonder why. I hope that they are going to do something about it though. As lease in Greymouth the council have built the treatment station to stop the sewage from going straight into the water. It is not a nice thought that raw sewage was going straight into the river.

You have come up with some really good ways of fundraising for The Great Barrier Reef. If you did lots of little things they would still all add up.
I would organise a fun run for all ages. Then people would pay to enter and that money would all go to the cause. I would get some sponsorship from businesses and give them away to the winners.

The Great Barrier Reef is an amazing place and I would like to go there one day. I recently went to Rarotonga and saw the fish and marine life there so I would really like to see it in Australia too.
Would you like to visit there one day?

Great work with another three activities.

    Until next time

    Allie :)
